What this calculator estimates
Add an entered daily calorie surplus to an entered maintenance estimate. This is simple energy arithmetic: it does not calculate maintenance or assess a training program.
Inputs and calculation method
The two inputs are maintenance calories per day and the surplus you want to compare. The tool adds them, multiplies the surplus by seven for a weekly total, and divides that weekly total by 7,700 to show a rough weight-equivalent illustration.
Formula and units
Daily comparison = maintenance kcal + surplus kcal. Weekly surplus = daily surplus × 7. Displayed weekly gain illustration = weekly surplus ÷ 7,700. That last fixed conversion is an arithmetic assumption, not a reliable prediction of weight or muscle gain.
How to use it
- Enter a maintenance estimate in kcal/day.
- Enter the positive daily surplus to compare.
- Calculate and read the daily and weekly energy totals.
- Treat the weight-equivalent figure as an illustration rather than a promised weekly change.
Worked example
Maintenance of 2,200 kcal/day plus a surplus of 250 gives 2,450 kcal/day. The weekly surplus is 1,750 kcal. Dividing by 7,700 produces the displayed illustration of 0.23 kg/week; it does not predict how much muscle or scale weight will actually change.
How to read the result
Both daily inputs are supplied by you. The tool has no goal-rate, training, body-composition or medical inputs, so it cannot decide whether the entered surplus is appropriate.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the calculator independently verifies maintenance.
- Reading the weight-equivalent value as pure muscle gain.
- Expecting a fixed calorie-to-weight rule to describe real weekly scale changes.
Method limitations
Energy expenditure and body mass adapt over time. Water, glycogen and the composition of gained tissue are not modelled. The calculation is intended for adult planning comparisons, not a personalised diet or growth plan.

Calorie Surplus Calculator FAQs
Does this estimate my maintenance calories?
No. Enter maintenance yourself or use an energy-estimation tool first.
Can I enter a desired rate of gain?
No. The form accepts a daily surplus, not a weekly goal rate.
Is the weekly gain guaranteed?
No. It is only the weekly surplus divided by a fixed 7,700-kcal/kg assumption.
Using the estimate
