Why a headline salary is not the whole offer
Two jobs with the same base salary can produce different real outcomes. Employer super may be paid on top of salary or included inside a total package. Bonuses may be discretionary. Extra leave has a measurable value, while commuting, parking, uniforms, tools and unpaid travel consume part of the benefit.
The job-offer comparison tool brings these items into one view. It does not tell you which role to take, because flexibility, workload, security, progression and management quality cannot be reduced to a formula. It does stop an attractive headline number from hiding obvious costs.
How the Australian take-home estimate works
The take-home pay change calculator uses resident individual income-tax brackets for the selected financial year, the low income tax offset where applicable and an optional standard Medicare levy estimate. It deliberately excludes HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, deductions, salary sacrifice, other offsets and individual circumstances.
That makes the result useful for comparing a salary change, not for preparing a tax return or predicting an exact payslip. The calculator shows the assumptions beside the result and links to the Australian Taxation Office for the official rates.
When to use an official source instead
Use the Fair Work Ombudsman for minimum wages, awards, classifications, penalty rates and entitlements. Use the ATO for tax, super and withholding obligations. These tools are designed for planning and comparison after you already know the relevant lawful rate or proposed salary.
Frequently asked questions
Does the take-home calculator match payroll exactly?
No. It is an annual estimate and excludes HELP repayments, deductions, salary sacrifice, Medicare levy surcharge and individual payroll adjustments.
Does the job comparison calculator include tax?
No. It compares package value and recurring work costs before personal income tax because tax can depend on circumstances outside the offer.
Is super included in the salary?
That depends on the offer. The job comparison tool lets you mark each salary as either base plus super or a total package including super.
Can these tools check award wages?
No. Check award classifications, minimum rates and entitlements with the Fair Work Ombudsman.
