What this calculator estimates
Get a rough step-based calorie estimate from steps, body weight and a pace preset. This page uses a simple tool-specific heuristic, rather than measuring walking time, stride length or oxygen use.
Inputs and calculation method
Enter steps and kilograms, then choose Easy walk, Brisk walk or Fast walk / hills. Their fixed coefficients are 0.045, 0.05 and 0.06. Distance uses an assumed 0.75 metres per step. Neither the coefficient nor the stride assumption adapts to your actual walk.
Formula and units
Estimated kcal = steps × weight in kg × pace coefficient ÷ 100, rounded to a whole kcal. Approximate distance (km) = steps × 0.00075. Calories per 1,000 steps = weight in kg × pace coefficient × 10, rounded independently to a whole kcal; it is not scaled from the rounded main total. These are heuristic presets, not a validated individual energy measurement.
How to use it
- Enter the steps from the walk or period you want to estimate.
- Enter body weight in kg and choose a pace preset.
- Calculate and check the assumed distance against your measured route, if known.
- For a time-based estimate, use the walking calculator with minutes and a MET preset.
Worked example
For 10,000 steps, 70 kg and Brisk walk (0.05), estimated energy is 10,000 × 70 × 0.05 ÷ 100 = 350 kcal. The assumed distance is 7.5 km and the result is 35 kcal per 1,000 steps. At Easy walk the same steps and weight give 315 kcal.
How to read the result
The pace option changes a fixed coefficient. It does not measure speed or hills. The distance is also approximate: someone with a 0.60 m stride would cover 6 km in 10,000 steps instead of the displayed 7.5 km.
Common mistakes
- Treating the preset as a measurement of actual walking intensity.
- Assuming every person takes a 0.75 m step.
- Adding the result to a daily activity estimate that already includes the same walking.
Method limitations
Step length, terrain, pauses and device counting errors all affect the relationship between steps and energy. The coefficients are simple planning assumptions and are not claimed to come from the Compendium of Physical Activities.

Steps to Calories Calculator FAQs
Is the distance measured?
No. It is steps multiplied by a fixed 0.75 m per step.
Does “Fast walk / hills” measure a slope?
No. It selects the 0.06 coefficient; no gradient or speed is entered.
Which tool should I use if I know walking time?
The walking calories calculator uses minutes and MET presets, giving a different, explicitly time-based estimate.
Using the estimate
Use the result only as a rough step-based comparison. A route distance or walking duration gives you a better way to check the preset assumptions.
