What this calculator estimates
Estimate meal energy from the grams of protein, carbohydrate, fat and optional alcohol you already know. This page adds macro energy; it does not identify ingredients or estimate portion sizes.
Inputs and calculation method
Enter grams of each macronutrient for the same meal or portion. The calculator applies approximate kcal-per-gram factors and adds the contributions. It also shows protein, carbohydrate and fat energy separately.
Formula and units
Estimated kcal = protein grams × 4 + carbohydrate grams × 4 + fat grams × 9 + alcohol grams × 7. Each displayed contribution and the total are rounded to whole kcal.
How to use it
- Find macro grams for the meal from reliable ingredient data or a label.
- Keep every input on the same basis, such as per portion rather than mixing per 100 g and per serving.
- Enter protein, carbohydrate and fat grams; leave alcohol at zero when absent.
- Calculate and compare the energy breakdown with the total.
Worked example
For 35 g protein, 55 g carbohydrate, 18 g fat and no alcohol, energy is 140 + 220 + 162 = 522 kcal. Adding 10 g alcohol increases the total by 70 kcal to 592 kcal.
How to read the result
The inputs are grams of nutrients, not grams of the foods containing them. A 100 g serving of chicken is not entered as 100 g protein. If the food label already gives total energy, this tool is a cross-check rather than a replacement for that figure.
Common mistakes
- Entering food weights instead of macro grams.
- Mixing per-serving and per-100 g nutrient values.
- Adding alcohol energy again when it is already included in another total being compared.
Method limitations
The 4/4/9/7 method is approximate. Australian labelling calculations can include fibre, organic acids and other factors, so a label or food database can legitimately differ. This calculator does not produce a compliant nutrition information panel.

Meal Calorie Calculator FAQs
Can I enter foods by name?
No. Enter their macro grams; there is no food database on this page.
Why does a food label show different energy?
Labels can use different energy factors and include components not entered here, as well as rounded nutrient values.
How do I divide a whole recipe into servings?
First total the whole-recipe energy, then use the recipe calorie calculator to divide it by servings.

Using the estimate
Use consistent macro grams to check meal energy with the stated factors. The result is a transparent approximation, not a full food-composition analysis.
Look beyond the meal calorie total
Meals with similar calories can differ substantially in fibre and free sugar.
