What this calculator estimates

Calculate a rough adult fluid-planning estimate from body weight and an activity preset. This page uses a simple weight-based rule; it does not measure hydration or implement the Australian adequate-intake tables.

Inputs and calculation method

Only weight and activity affect this result. The shared form also contains age, equation option and height, but those controls are not used by the water calculation. There are no exercise-duration, climate or sweat-rate fields.

Formula and units

Base amount = weight in kg × 35 mL. Add 500 mL when the selected activity factor is above 1.55, or 250 mL otherwise. Displayed litres = (base + adjustment) ÷ 1,000, rounded to one decimal place. Moderate activity at 1.55 receives the 250 mL adjustment.

How to use it

  1. Enter body weight in kilograms.
  2. Choose the activity category and calculate.
  3. Read the base millilitres and the fixed activity addition together.
  4. Consider actual conditions and individual guidance; do not treat the number as an instruction to drink regardless of thirst or a fluid restriction.

Worked example

At 70 kg, the base is 70 × 35 = 2,450 mL. Moderate activity adds 250 mL, giving 2,700 mL or 2.7 L. Very active adds 500 mL, giving 2,950 mL, displayed as 3.0 L after rounding.

How to read the result

This heuristic is separate from Australian population guidance, which distinguishes fluid from total water including food. It does not estimate your actual sweat loss or replace an individual fluid plan.

Common mistakes

Method limitations

Body size alone cannot establish hydration needs. Heat, exercise, illness, pregnancy and medical fluid restrictions need context this form does not collect. Avoid using a fixed output to force fluid intake.

Water Intake Calculator FAQs

Why do age and height not change the answer?

They are present in the shared form but the executed water calculation uses only weight and activity.

Can I enter hot weather or a long workout?

No. There are no climate, duration or sweat inputs; the activity adjustment is only a fixed 250 or 500 mL preset.

Is this the Australian adequate intake?

No. It is a separate 35 mL/kg heuristic plus an activity addition. Australian guidance distinguishes fluids from total water including food.

Using the estimate

Use the result only to understand the stated weight and activity assumptions. Real fluid needs require context beyond this heuristic.
