How the length converter works
Length is a linear measurement, so every supported unit can be converted through one common base unit without squaring or cubing the factor. This calculator first changes the entered value into metres, then divides by the metre value of the destination unit. The method is the same whether you are converting a small product dimension in millimetres or a road distance in miles.

For example, converting 180 centimetres to inches means converting 180 cm to 1.8 metres, then dividing by 0.0254. The result is about 70.866 inches. The calculator retains additional decimal places internally and rounds only the displayed answer.
Choose the unit that matches the job
The mathematically correct answer is not always the most usable answer. A cabinet opening may be easier to communicate in millimetres because whole millimetres avoid awkward decimals. Human height is often shown in centimetres in Australia, while an imported product listing may use feet and inches. A road route is clearer in kilometres or miles than in millions of millimetres.
When a source gives feet and inches separately, convert the whole measurement to one unit before using the tool. Five feet ten inches is 70 inches, not 5.10 feet. To express a decimal-foot result as feet and inches, keep the whole feet and multiply the decimal remainder by 12. A result of 5.75 feet is 5 feet 9 inches.
Nominal product sizes also need care. A “two-by-four”, a television screen size or a pipe designation may be a category name rather than the exact finished dimension. Convert the measured specification, not the marketing label.
Worked length conversion examples
Height: 180 cm to feet and inches
180 cm equals about 70.866 inches. Dividing by 12 gives 5 whole feet with 10.866 inches remaining, so the practical height is approximately 5 ft 10.9 in. Rounding to 5 ft 11 in is reasonable for a casual description, but not for fitting equipment.
Room dimension: 2.4 m to feet
2.4 metres converts to about 7.874 feet. For a building sketch, 7.87 ft may be enough. For conventional imperial notation, the decimal remainder represents about 10.49 inches, giving roughly 7 ft 10.5 in.
Running distance: 10 km to miles
10 kilometres is about 6.214 miles. A training plan can normally show 6.21 miles; a route measured by GPS may still vary slightly because of signal, path selection and device smoothing.
Product dimension: 12 inches to centimetres
Because one inch equals exactly 2.54 centimetres, 12 inches equals 30.48 centimetres. Do not round this to 30 cm when checking whether an item fits into a space with only a few millimetres of clearance.
Common mistakes and quick checks
- Using a linear factor for area or volume: converting metres to feet is not the same as converting square metres to square feet or cubic metres to cubic feet.
- Reading a decimal as feet and inches: 5.8 feet is 5 feet 9.6 inches, not 5 feet 8 inches.
- Entering the wrong scale: 250 mm, 25 cm and 2.5 m differ by powers of ten even though the digits look similar.
- Rounding before the final step: repeated early rounding can create a visible fit error across several components.
- Assuming the source measurement is exact: a tape measure, phone app, GPS route or product listing may be less precise than the converter.
A useful reasonableness check is to compare unit size. Converting to a smaller unit should produce a larger number: metres to centimetres multiplies the number. Converting to a larger unit should produce a smaller number: centimetres to metres reduces it.
Precision, rounding and limitations
The conversion factors are defined consistently, but the final answer cannot be more reliable than the input. If a board was measured to the nearest centimetre, reporting its converted length to six decimal inches creates false precision. Keep extra digits while calculating, then round to the tolerance relevant to the task.
Casual travel distances usually need two decimal places at most. Room planning may need centimetres or millimetres. Fabric cutting, machining, surveying and regulated construction can require specified methods, calibrated equipment and documented tolerances. This page does not replace a survey, engineering drawing, manufacturer specification or trade standard.
A reliable measurement-to-conversion workflow
Good length work starts before a number is entered. Record what was measured, where the endpoints were taken and which tool was used. A wall opening measured from finished surface to finished surface is not interchangeable with a framing dimension. A garment’s flat width is not the same as body circumference. A map route measured along roads is not the same as straight-line distance. The converter cannot recover context that was never recorded.
For fitting and fabrication, separate measurement uncertainty from conversion precision. A tape reading of 842 mm to the nearest millimetre may convert to 33.1496 inches mathematically, but the physical dimension is still only known to roughly the tape’s resolution and the user’s technique. Keep extra digits during calculations, then round once according to the actual tolerance. Where several parts must fit together, work in one unit system for the whole drawing rather than repeatedly converting individual dimensions back and forth.
DIY, product and route checks
For DIY, measure the narrowest relevant opening and allow clearance for hinges, handles, skirting, uneven walls and installation movement. For online products, check whether dimensions are internal, external, packed or assembled. For walking, running and driving distances, expect route tools and GPS devices to differ because they sample positions, smooth tracks and choose paths differently. A unit conversion can reconcile kilometres and miles, but it cannot make two different route measurements identical.
When communicating a converted value, include both units at first mention: for example, “1,200 mm (about 47.24 in)”. That preserves the original specification and makes it obvious which value was measured and which was derived. For regulated building, surveying, machining or safety-critical work, follow the applicable drawing, standard and calibrated-measurement process rather than treating a general web converter as the controlling record.
Documenting a converted dimension
Where a measurement affects a purchase or installation, save the original figure, the converted figure, the date and the source. A screenshot of a product page can be useful because online specifications sometimes change. For repeated production work, nominate one controlling unit and mark converted values as references only. This reduces the risk of a rounded imperial value being converted back into metric and treated as the original specification.
Before ordering, compare the available clearance with the product’s largest relevant dimension, not merely its headline width or height. Packaging, diagonal movement and access turns can matter. A converter helps compare units, but a physical template, supplier drawing or on-site check is often the better final test.

The calculator uses the defined relationship of one inch equalling 25.4 millimetres and twelve inches equalling one foot. The conversion can be exact even when the original physical measurement is approximate.
