Unit conversion calculator

Weight Converter

Convert metric and imperial mass units for body weight, recipes, postage, freight, gym loads and product specifications.

This changes mass units only. Do not use weight ounces for fluid ounces, or infer grams from cups without ingredient density.

How the weight converter works

Every option in this calculator is treated as a unit of mass and converted through grams. The entered value is multiplied by the gram value of the source unit, then divided by the gram value of the destination unit. In everyday language people usually say “weight”, although kilograms, grams, pounds and ounces are technically mass units.

UnitGram relationshipTypical context
1 mg0.001 gSmall ingredient, laboratory and medicine quantities
1 kg1,000 gBody weight, luggage and food packs
1 tonne1,000,000 gFreight, vehicles and bulk material
1 oz28.349523125 gImperial food and product weights
1 lb453.59237 gBody weight, gym plates and shipping
1 stone6,350.29318 gBody weight in some UK contexts

For a 75 kg conversion to pounds, the calculator changes 75 kg to 75,000 grams, then divides by 453.59237. The result is approximately 165.347 lb.

Mass units that look similar but are not interchangeable

Use milligrams for genuinely small quantities, grams for food and light products, kilograms for people and normal parcels, and tonnes for large loads. Switching from kilograms to grams changes the displayed number by one thousand, so a misplaced unit can be more serious than a rounding difference.

This tool uses the ordinary avoirdupois ounce and pound. It does not convert troy ounces used for precious metals. It also does not convert fluid ounces, which measure volume rather than mass. A fluid ounce of water has a mass, but that mass changes with the liquid and conditions; the words “ounce” and “fluid ounce” must not be treated as the same unit.

Recipes often ask for grams because mass is more repeatable than cup volume. Converting cups to grams requires ingredient density, packing and preparation method, so use a recipe-specific ingredient conversion rather than this weight converter.

Worked weight conversion examples

Body weight: 82 kg to pounds

82 kilograms equals about 180.779 pounds. A bathroom scale reading to the nearest 0.1 kg does not justify reporting six decimal pounds; 180.8 lb is a sensible display.

Gym plate: 45 lb to kilograms

45 pounds converts to about 20.412 kilograms. This is why a nominal 45 lb plate is often discussed alongside a 20 kg plate even though the two are not exactly equal.

Recipe amount: 12 ounces to grams

12 avoirdupois ounces equals approximately 340.194 grams. Confirm that the recipe means weight ounces, not US fluid ounces, before using the number.

Freight load: 1.2 tonnes to kilograms

1.2 metric tonnes equals 1,200 kilograms. The converter uses the metric tonne, not the US short ton or UK long ton.

Common mistakes and reasonableness checks

When converting from kilograms to pounds, the number should become a little more than twice as large. When converting pounds to kilograms, it should fall to a little under half. If the result moves in the opposite direction, recheck the selected units.

Scale accuracy, rounding and professional use

The arithmetic uses fixed factors, but a converted result inherits the uncertainty of the scale or source label. Kitchen scales may round to one gram, bathroom scales often round to 0.1 kg, and freight documentation may specify a different tolerance. Match the displayed precision to the instrument and decision.

For medication, laboratory work, regulated trade, load limits and transport compliance, use calibrated equipment and the required official procedure. The converter can verify unit arithmetic but cannot confirm a scale’s calibration, legal-for-trade status, load distribution or safety margin.

Do not convert a stated limit into a target. If equipment is rated to a maximum mass, allow for measurement error and follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than operating exactly at the calculated boundary.

Mass records for shipping, food and body tracking

A useful weight conversion starts with the correct kind of value. Shipping documents may show net mass, tare mass and gross mass. Net mass is the contents, tare is the packaging or container, and gross mass is the combined shipment. Converting the wrong line can affect postage estimates, freight limits or inventory records even when the arithmetic is flawless. Keep the original label and unit beside the converted value so the basis remains auditable.

Kitchen scales usually measure mass directly and are more dependable than converting cups to grams. Ingredient volume depends on density, packing, particle size and measuring technique. One cup of flour, sugar, butter and water cannot share one gram factor. Use the cooking converter only for compatible volume units, and use an ingredient-specific source when changing a recipe from volume to mass. For very small amounts, check the scale’s minimum load and resolution; displaying 0.01 g does not mean the device can reliably detect that change.

Body-weight trends need consistent conditions

For personal tracking, pounds and kilograms describe the same measurement in different units, but day-to-day changes can reflect water, food, clothing and scale placement. Compare readings taken under similar conditions and focus on trends rather than treating every converted decimal as meaningful. A reading entered to the nearest 0.1 kg should not be presented as though it were known to the nearest hundredth of a pound.

In trade and professional settings, “weight” is often used conversationally for mass, although force and mass are technically different physical quantities. This converter handles everyday mass units such as kilograms, grams, pounds, ounces, stones and tonnes. It does not calculate force in newtons, volumetric freight weight, vehicle payload compliance or medication doses. Those tasks require their own definitions, measurements and safety rules.

Checks before using a converted mass

For postage or freight, confirm whether the carrier charges by actual mass or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is calculated from parcel dimensions using a carrier-specific divisor; it is not obtained by converting kilograms to pounds. Check per-item, carton and total-consignment limits separately, because the same converted total may still breach an individual package rule.

For recipes and supplements, do not use the converter to create a dose. Product concentration, serving instructions and measuring-device accuracy matter in addition to mass. Medication and chemical quantities require the labelled device or qualified guidance. For inventory, keep enough decimals to reconcile totals but round displayed package weights according to the scale and reporting requirement.

A final reasonableness check is scale: kilograms convert to a little more than twice as many pounds, while pounds convert to less than half as many kilograms. If a 10 kg item becomes 4.5 lb, the direction or selected units are wrong.

Weight converter FAQs

Does this calculator convert weight or mass?

It converts units normally described as weight in everyday use, but the supported grams, kilograms, pounds and ounces are units of mass.

Are these troy ounces?

No. The ounce option is the standard avoirdupois ounce used for ordinary goods and body weight. Precious-metal troy ounces need a separate conversion.

Can I convert grams directly to millilitres?

Not from the unit alone. You need the substance’s density and sometimes its temperature or packing method to connect mass with volume.

What kind of tonne is included?

The calculator uses the metric tonne, equal to 1,000 kilograms. It does not use the US short ton or imperial long ton.

Why does my scale not match the converted number exactly?

Scales round, drift and have measurement tolerances. Clothing, containers, surface position and calibration can also change the reading.
